Jio vs The Rest: Next round of telecom sector consolidation has just begun

From an industry that had a profit after tax of 15% of its revenues in 2007-08, its losses hit more than Rs 180 bn in 2016-17 even though the revenues doubled in the same period.

Business News India : For a customer using a mobile phone since 2007, it has been a dream run with voice calls now becoming free and unlimited compared to Rs 1 you had to fork out in 2007. Now you pay only for data at rock-bottom prices and monthly bills have dramatically halved in the past 18 months.
Yet in stark contrast, the story of telcos in the last decade has been a topsy-turvy downhill battle, bruised by cut-throat competition, policy paralysis and Central Bureau of Investigation probes, high spectrum prices, and the stick of the Supreme Court, which cancelled over 122 licences. But the incumbents have also faltered, misreading the dramatic change which 4G data would unleash, thanks to the entry of Reliance Jio.
From an industry that had a profit after tax of 15 per cent of its revenues in 2007-08, its losses hit more than Rs 180 billion in 2016-17 even though the revenues doubled in the same period. And its debt burden just went through the roof, increasing five-fold through the decade, which is close to double its overall revenues (see chart). As a result, many telcos like RCom that were unable to pay back loans sold their assets or, like Aircel, filed for bankruptcy.
The inevitable impact was that as many as eight companies such as STel, Loop, and Etisalat closed down operations, some like Telenor and MTS, which tried once again by acquiring the licence for a second time, failed miserably again. And desi players like Tata Teleservices and RCom that could not take the heat of competition unleased by the entry of Jio also called it a day. Together, estimates say, they lost more than Rs 1,500 billion in cash.
Jio hastened the consolidation by its disruptive pricing, and now analysts say there will only be four players — Bharti, Vodafone-Idea, Jio and BSNL.

India's second-largest telecom operator Vodafone on Thursday announced a short-duration plan that offers unlimited calling and 500 MB data at about Rs 69 with 7 days of validity.

The move comes at a time when the Indian telecom market - the second-largest in the world after China - is witnessing an intensifying competition among telecom operators which are trying to outdo each other with newer packs and attractive bundled offers to woo consumers.

Recently, Vodafone has inked a pact with Micromax to roll out a 4G smartphone at an effective price of Rs 999. Dubbed as Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra, the smartphone will go on sale in November.

Vodafone, in a statement, said its 'SuperWeek plan' will enable customers to make "unlimited local and STD calls to any network bundled with 500 MB data at just Rs 69 for a week".

Repeat purchases of the pack can be made, Vodafone said, adding that the new packs are available across all retail outlets, USSD, website and its app.

As the incumbent operators look to take on Reliance Jio and retain their customer base for feature phones, they are forging partnerships with handset makers so as to make smartphones affordable and within reach of a large section of society.

After Airtel, which has tied up with Karbonn to come out with a Karbonn A40 Indian smartphone for an effective price of Rs 1,399, Vodafone has also forged a partnership with Micromax, wherein customers can own a 4G smartphone for Rs 999.

According to the Vodafone offer, existing and new Vodafone customers will have to buy the Micromax Bharat-2 Ultra smartphone by paying Rs 2,899 and if they recharge at least Rs 150 per month for 36 months, Rs 1,900 will be returned as cashback.

At the end of 18 months, users will receive a cashback of Rs 900 and after another 18 months, a cashback of Rs 1,000, in their Vodafone M-Pesa wallets. Vodafone has not provided a specific plan for the Micromax offer and people buying the device can recharge with existing offers of the company.

As the company is targeting feature phone users, who usually recharge with amounts starting at Rs 10, Vodafone has allowed the flexibility for users to choose recharges of any denomination but to avail the offer, a minimum of Rs 150 should be spent in a month, or Rs 2,700 in 18 months.

Days before the spectrum auction commences, British telecom major Vodafone Group has infused Rs 47,700 crore fresh equity capital in its Indian arm - the largest-ever foreign direct investment in rupee terms in the country. The money has been received already and Vodafone India, the country's second-largest telecom operator after Bharti Airtel, will use the funds to strengthen its spectrum portfolio, network roll-out and retire debt.
Commenting on the capital infusion, Sunil Sood, chief executive officer of Vodafone India, said: "This reaffirms our commitment to India. With this, we will focus on right-sizing our spectrum portfolio and deployment of 4G and 5G technology."
The government is putting 2,354.55 megahertz of spectrum at the auction table, giving an opportunity to operators such as Vodafone to strengthen their spectrum holdings. Vodafone is expected to be one of the strongest bidders during the spectrum auction and the company has deposited earnest money deposit (EMD) of Rs 2,740 crore towards spectrum auctions. Idea Cellular's EMD amount is Rs 2,000 crore and Bharti Airtel's is Rs 1,980 crore.
