Ashok Leyland Q1 profit up by 233% to Rs 3.70 billion, beats estimate

MHCV volumes including exports increased by 54% to 30647 numbers during the quarter, while LCV volumes increased by 33 per cent to 11481 numbers.

Share Market News » Ashok Leyland has reported a 233 per cent growth in profit to Rs 3.70 billion during the quarter ended June 2018 as compared to Rs 1.11 billion, a year ago, beatingestimates.
Revenues rose by 47 per cent to Rs 62.50 billion as compared to Rs 42.58 billion.

MHCV volumes including exports increased by 54% to 30647 numbers during the quarter, while LCV volumes increased by 33 per cent to 11481 numbers.

Vinod K. Dasari, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland Limited said that the Total Industry Volume registered 84 per cent growth primarily driven by surge in infrastructure spend resulting in higher sale of Tipper and MAVs.

"There was also the impact of base effect. We continued our focus on profitable growth and tight control on working capital, in a market which operated on heavy discounting and credit push.” He further added, “Despite pressure on realization and raw material price increases, I am happy that we continue to post growth with profitability," said Dasari.

ALL has grown significantly in the Intermediate Commercial Vehicles (ICVs). The LCV and Bus business have also posted significant growth. Exports have also grown by 24 per cent, said Dasari, adding that the company will continue to pursue strategy of de-risking the company from cyclicality even as it pursue superior returns.

Gopal Mahadevan, CFO, Ashok Leyland added, “The company had seen a double-digit EBITDA margins for 13 of the 14 sequential quarters.”

Net cash in the Balance Sheet is Rs 11.65 billion. Focus on operating costs, product mix, and material cost optimisation will continue, even as the company pursue growth, said Mahadevan.

Make in India: Ashok Leyland launches India's 1st electric bus

Commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland on Monday launched India’s first Made-in-India electric bus. The company has invested Rs 150-200 crore to develop this.
Ashok Leyland owns an UK firm, Optare, which is a leading alternate technology player, especially in electric bus manufacturer.
“This new series is developed in India and is the next generation technology,” said Vinod K Dasari, managing director.
The vehicle would cost around Rs 1.5-3 crore, depending on the batteries and seats, says company officials. Upfront cost is high, but it can deliver payback to the customer in about four-five years, says Dasari.
Dasari is also hopeful that the government would give subsidy for the vehicle
“The Circuit series of buses is another testament to Ashok Leyland’s commitment to leverage India’s technological innovation to deliver relevant and best-in-class solutions for India and the world,” said Dasari.

Ashok Leyland to buy Nissan out of three JVs

Ashok Leyland will buy partner Nissan’s stakes in Ashok Leyland Nissan Vehicles, Nissan Ashok Leyland Powertrain and Nissan Ashok Leyland Technologies.
The partners on Wednesday announced a restructuring agreement in which Nissan agreed to sell to Ashok Leyland all of its shares in the three joint ventures (JV) that were formed in 2008. The value of the transactions was not disclosed.
These companies will become wholly-owned Ashok Leyland subsidiaries. The process is expected to be concluded this year. Ashok Leyland will continue to manufacture under a licensing agreement the Dost and Partner light commercial vehicles that are based on Nissan’s design, engineering and technology. Servicing and spare parts will be ensured by a technical support arrangement. The firms will continue their arrangement to procure spare parts from India for Nissan.
