International News : Former US president Barack Obama, who arrived in India on Thursday, addressed the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2017 in New Delhi on Friday.

Along with Obama,  Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, among other luminaries, will discuss India’s rise on the global stage today.

Breaking News - US President Barack Obama awarded Vice President Joe Biden, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honour, in a surprise tribute to his White House partner of 8 years. A teary-eyed  Joe Biden accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a ceremony at the White House dedicated to honouring the outgoing vice-president.

Biden was visibly overwhelmed and said the award was more than he deserved. "Mr President, I'm indebted to you. I'm indebted to your friendship. I'm indebted to your family," he said.

Obama described the former Delaware senator as "the best vice president America's ever had" and a "lion of American history", during an emotional ceremony to honour the 74-year-old at the White House.

"For the final time as president, I am pleased to award our nation's highest civilian honor, the presidential Medal of Freedom," Obama said.

Obama said the tribute will give the Internet one last chance to joke about the "bromance" the two share. "This is an extraordinary man, with an extraordinary career in public service," he said.

Latest News - It’s good to be home. My fellow Americans, Michelle and I have been so touched by all the well-wishes we’ve received over the past few weeks. But tonight it’s my turn to say thanks. Let’s be clear: Installing Donald Trump in the White House is an epic mistake. In the long run, its consequences may well be apocalyptic, if only because we have probably lost our last, best chance to rein in runaway climate change.

But will the extent of the disaster become apparent right away? Millions in US told to flee hurricane, Haiti toll over 250

Some 3 million people on the US southeast coast faced urgent evacuation as monstrous Hurricane Matthew -- now blamed for more than 250 deaths in Haiti alone -- bore down for a direct hit on Florida.

Highways in Florida and neighboring states clogged up with people streaming inland to escape the storm.

President Barack Obama on Thursday declared a federal state of emergency in Florida as it braced for the ferocious Category Four hurricane.

Poor and vulnerable Haiti remained essentially cut in half two days after Matthew hit. Interior Minister Francois Anick Joseph said at least 108 Haitians have died, with 50 killed in a single town and reports of "complete destruction" in the island's south.

In its latest target, the storm slammed the Bahamas on Thursday.

According to the forecast track, the hurricane could make landfall on Friday in the United States near Cape Canaveral, where NASA's Kennedy Space Center is located.

As US gas stations ran dry, frantic shoppers flocked to stores for essentials.

Matthew regained power as it swirled toward the US coast, upgraded a notch to Category Four on Thursday by the National Hurricane Center on its 1-5 scale.

Barack Obama cancels meeting with new Philippine President Duterte

President Barack Obama called off a planned meeting on Tuesday with new Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, seeking distance from a US ally's leader during a diplomatic tour that's put Obama in close quarters with a cast of contentious world figures.

It's unusual for one president to tell another what to say or not say, and much rarer to call the other a "son of a bitch." Duterte managed to do both just before flying to Laos for a regional summit, warning Obama not to challenge him over extrajudicial killings in the Philippines.

"Clearly, he's a colourful guy," Obama said. "What I've instructed my team to do is talk to their Philippine counterparts to find out is this in fact a time where we can have some constructive, productive conversations."

Early today, National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said the meeting with Duterte was off.

Duterte has been under intense global scrutiny over the more than 2,000 suspected drug dealers and users killed since he took office. Obama had said he planned to raise the issue in his first meeting with Duterte, but the Philippine leader insisted he was only listening to his own country's people.
