From the civil war to 9/11: A brief history of national emergencies in United States

Here are some notable examples of national emergency declarations in the United States.

International News:  If President Donald Trump declares a national emergency to build a wall on the southern border of the US it would be an extraordinary action sure to draw lawsuits and consternation on both sides of the aisle.

Yet it would be far from the first time a president has declared a national emergency in support of domestic objectives. Among the most famous was President Abraham Lincoln’s decision in 1861 to suspend habeas corpus, citing the demands of the Civil War.

Since then, emergencies have been declared during crises large (the Great Depression, the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terror attacks) and small (remember the 1970 postal strike?).

Trump, eager to bypass a Congress that has refused to appropriate funds for the wall -- precipitating a partial government shutdown that has stretched into its 18th day -- is considering invoking emergency powers that allow the Department of Defense to shift military construction funds during a crisis.

Saudi Arabia slams US senate vote on Yemen war, Jamal Khashoggi murder as 'interference'

The Senate approved a resolution condemning Khashoggi's murder and calling Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, "responsible" for it

Jamal Khashoggi Case
International News: Saudi Arabia has rejected as "interference" a US Senate resolution to end American military support for a Riyadh-led war in Yemen, and another holding its crown prince responsible for the murder of critic Jamal Khashoggi.

"The kingdom condemns the latest position of the US Senate that was based on unsubstantiated allegations and rejects the blatant interference in its internal affairs," the foreign ministry said in a statement released by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Though largely symbolic, the US Senate vote on Thursday dealt a fresh warning to President Donald Trump, who has staunchly backed the Saudi regime despite global uproar over the Yemen conflict and the murder of journalist Khashoggi.

On the Yemen measure, which more broadly attacks the president's prerogative to launch military action, 49 Democrats or their allies voted in favor, along with seven Republicans, while another three Republicans abstained.

The Senate also approved a resolution condemning Khashoggi's murder and calling Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, "responsible" for it.

Donald Trump unlikely to accept PM Narendra Modi's Republic Day invitation

The sources said India has already shortlisted names of two-three heads of states for extending the invitation to be chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

trump 2

Latest News: US President Donald Trump is unlikely to accept India's invitation to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations, sources said Sunday.

The US is understood to have conveyed to New Delhi that Trump may not be able to honour the invitation as he will have pressing engagements, including his State of The Union (SOTU) address, around the time India will celebrate its Republic Day.

This comes at a time when Indo-US ties have witnessed some strain after India went ahead and sealed a deal with Russia to procure a batch of S-400 air defence missile systems, notwithstanding US threat of punitive action under CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act).

The sources said India has already shortlisted names of two-three heads of states for extending invitation to be chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

Earlier this year, the US announced sanctions against Russia under CAATSA for its alleged meddling in the American presidential election in 2016.

Florida Shooting: Four killed, including gunman at a video game tournament

The police said a mass shooting led to multiple fatalities and warned people to stay 'many blocks' away.

florida shooting

Florida Shooting News: Four people were killed in a shooting on Sunday in a mall in Jacksonville, Florida, media reports said. Eleven people were wounded by the gunfire, of whom four have died, Efe reported.

"There were three deceased individuals at the scene, one of those being the suspect, who took his own life," Sheriff Mike Williams told a news conference yesterday, naming the suspect as 24-year-old David Katz from Baltimore, Maryland.

The police said a mass shooting led to multiple fatalities and warned people to stay "many blocks" away.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said on Twitter that the shooting took place in Jacksonville Landing, a downtown market place, and warned everyone to stay "many blocks" away from the area, as the area "is not safe at this time".

While local law enforcement authorities have released no specific figures, they are speaking of "multiple" fatalities at the Jacksonville Landing mall, including many people taken to hospitals in the area.
"Mass shooting at the Jacksonville Landing. Stay far away from the area. The area is not safe at this time. STAY AWAY" said the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on its Twitter account, adding in another tweet "Multiple fatalities at the scene, many transported".
SWAT teams made a sweep of the area to rescue people who had hidden in the shops within the mall when the gunfire broke out.
Law enforcement also took to the social networks to ask people who were in hiding at the mall to remain under cover and "calm" until officers could find them.

At the press conference, Williams also said that the sweep of the mall by law enforcement had concluded and that no further victims or witnesses had been found, adding that within a few hours additional details would be provided to the media on the case.

The Jacksonville Landing mall is a popular shopping center with about 20 restaurants and some 70 stores that are visited each year by many thousands of local residents and tourists.

Army lieutenant colonel Martin O’Donnell told VOA that counterterrorism strikes were carried out on June 13 in Kunar province which lies close to Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
Further, Pentagon officials refused to comment on whether the strike was successful.
@ANI United States military official has confirmed to Voice of America (VOA) that an American drone strike targeted Mullah Fazal Ullah, the leader of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, in an Afghan province near the border with #Pakistan

Kim-Trump Summit: United Nations to lift travel ban for North Korean officials

Trump earlier said the fate of the summit will be decided next week as his aides travelled to Singapore to prepare the meeting and push for certain conditions to be met.

Kim-Trump summit
International News : A UN Security Council committee has agreed to lift a travel ban on North Korean officials heading to Singapore for the planned summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un next month, diplomats said.
Singapore last week asked the sanctions committee to grant an exemption to the North Korean delegation attending the June 12 summit and taking part in preparatory meetings, according to the request seen by AFP.
“This summit will serve as an opportunity to advance the objective of a peaceful resolution of the DPRK nuclear issue and the establishment of peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in the region,” wrote Singapore’s UN Ambassador Burhan Gafoor to the committee.
The letter did not specify the size of the delegation from Pyongyang. The UN sanctions blacklist for North Korea has 80 individuals and 75 entities which are subject to a global travel ban and an assets freeze. The request for the blanket exemption to the global travel plan was approved on Thursday after none of the council members raised objections.
Trump earlier said the fate of the summit will be decided next week as his aides travelled to Singapore to prepare the meeting and push for certain conditions to be met.
“There are certain conditions we want to happen. I think we’ll get those conditions. And if we don’t, we won’t have the meeting,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday. The Security Council has imposed tough sanctions on North Korea that ban trade in commodities and severely restrict deliveries of oil vital to Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear programme.

YouTube Shooting: Shooter Nasim Aghdam identified in California; 10 updates

YouTube employees recounted dramatic scenes as they fled the headquarters of the Google-owned video sharing service near San Francisco.

YouTube Shooting
International News : A woman who had voiced complaints online about YouTube opened fire with a handgun at the tech company’s headquarters near San Francisco on Tuesday, wounding three people before shooting herself dead, authorities and media said.
It was the latest in a string of mass shootings in the United States in recent years. Most recently, the massacre of 17 people at a Florida high school has led to calls for tighter curbs on gun ownership.
Police did not identify the suspect or say what might have motivated Tuesday’s shooting at YouTube, a video-sharing service owned by Alphabet Inc’s Google which employs nearly 2,000 people at the San Bruno, California offices.
The woman approached an outdoor patio and dining courtyard on the campus around lunchtime and began to fire before entering the building, police said. An affiliate of ABC and other local media, citing unnamed sources, identified the woman as Nasim Aghdam.
San Bruno police officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the identity of the attacker.
YouTube spokeswoman Jessica Mason could not immediately be reached for comment on the identification by media.
The website NasimeSabz.com, which media said was linked to the attacker, had several posts about Persian culture and veganism, interspersed with screeds against YouTube.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai thanked the police and first responders for their efforts.
“There are no words to describe the tragedy that occurred today. Susan Wojcicki and I are focused on supporting our employees and the YouTube community through this difficult time together. Thank you to the police & first responders for their efforts, and to all for msgs of support,” he tweeted. YouTube headquarters is located some 30 miles (50 kilometres) from the main Google campus in Mountain View.

Kim Jong-un meets Xi, says he is committed to de-nuked Korean peninsula

Kim Jong-Un is understood to have reiterated his commitment to the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

Kim Jong-un meets Xi.jpg
International News : China confirmed Wednesday that Kim Jong Un met with President Xi Jinping on a surprise visit to Beijing, and said the North Korean leader would be willing to give up his nuclear weapons and hold a summit with the US.
The issue of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula can be resolved, if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realization of peace,” Kim said during the four-day visit, according to Xinhua. Xi said that China continues to push for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and made four proposals to improve relations with North Korea, including maintaining frequent contact with Kim. Xi said China will continue to share friendship with North Korea as a “strategic choice” that “will not change because of any single event at a particular time.”
“We speak highly of this visit,” Xi told Kim, according the Xinhua story that repeatedly referred to the two leaders as comrades.
“We are willing to work together with DPRK comrades, remain true to our original aspiration and jointly move forward, to promote long-term healthy and stable development of China-DPRK relations, benefit the two countries and two peoples, and make new contribution to regional peace, stability and development,” Xi said.
The visit comes amid a diplomatic flurry in Asia as leaders jockey for face time with Kim and seek to defuse tensions over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

Key Points:

  • Xi hosted a grand banquet for Kim at the Great Hall of the People
  • Kim reiterated his commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula

Purchasing a gun in the US? Walmart just hiked the minimum age limit to 21

Walmart is removing items from its website that resemble assault-style rifles, including non-lethal airsoft guns and toys

 gun.jpg
International News : Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc said it will permanently stop selling assault-style rifles after the massacre at a Florida high school that has reopened a fierce debate over gun control in America.
The US retailer of camping supplies, sporting goods and guns will also stop selling high-capacity magazines and will not sell any guns to people under age 21, Dick’s chief executive, Ed Stack, said in an open letter on the company’s website.
Hours later, Walmart Inc, the largest US retailer, said it was raising the minimum age for the purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21 from 18. Walmart stopped selling assault-style firearms and accessories in 2015.
The announcements came the same day that classes resumed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people, mostly students, were killed two weeks ago in one of the deadliest US mass shootings.
The accused gunman, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, legally purchased a weapon at Dick’s in November, although not the type used in the shooting, Stack said. Cruz, a former student at Stoneman Douglas, is accused of using an AR-15 assault-style weapon to carry out the killing.
The massacre spurred a youth-led wave of protests, and state and national officials are considering whether to pass stricter gun control measures.
The powerful National Rifle Association traditionally opposes such curbs, citing the right to bear arms under the US Constitution’s Second Amendment.
Dick’s removed assault-style weapons from its Dick’s-branded stores after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut that killed 20 first-graders and six adults but continued selling them through another retail brand. Wednesday’s move takes them out of its 35 Field & Stream outlets as well, Stack said, adding the measure would be permanent.
Some analysts said the 2012 decision did not hurt the retailer’s sales, likely giving company executives confidence to make Wednesday’s move.
Stack said he knew the company’s decision would upset some customers, but he cited the passionate response by the students and families in Parkland.

In pics: Florida sees first snowfall in 29 years as bitter cold grips US

Tallahassee, Florida’s capital in the far north of the “Sunshine State,” awoke Wednesday to a dusting of 0.1 inches of snow, the first significant measurement since 1989.

florida.jpg
Florida Snowfall : It’s called snow, something residents of North Florida hadn’t seen in almost three decades until wednesday, and it is part of a deep-freeze striking the entire US East Coast.
The US National Weather Service warned that a major winter storm would bring heavy snow and ice, from Florida in the southeast up to New England and the Northeast on Wednesday and Thursday.
New York City was under a winter storm watch, with between three and six inches (8-15 centimeters) of snow expected from Wednesday night through Thursday.
Tallahassee, Florida’s capital in the far north of the “Sunshine State,” awoke Wednesday to a dusting of 0.1 inches of snow, the first significant measurement since 1989, according to the Weather Channel.
Floridians, more accustomed to hurricanes than this odd white substance, rushed to publish on social media their photos of snow covering their warm-weather flip-flop footwear and outdoor swimming pools.
#snowmageddon, they called it on Twitter.
The storm has already led to the closure of roads in northern Florida and southeastern Georgia, where governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in the coastal area.
Florida’s governor Rick Scott urged people in the northern part of his state “to prepare for extreme cold weather conditions, including potential snow, sleet or ice accumulations.”

Donald Trump wanted to be the most famous man in the world, not US President

The book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” written by Michael Wolff, claims that the ultimate goal of Trump was never to win

 trump
Donald Trump did not want to be the president of the US and the First Lady Melania was in tears not of joy on knowing about the surprising electoral victory last year, according to a new book by an American journalist.
The book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” written by Michael Wolff, claims that the ultimate goal of Trump was never to win.
“His ultimate goal, after all, had never been to win. I can be the most famous man in the world,” he had told his aide Sam Nunberg at the outset of the race.
“His longtime friend Roger Ailes, the former head of Fox News, liked to say that if you want a career in television, first run for president,” according to the excerpts of the book.
“Shortly after Trump’s inauguration, Wolff said, he was able to take up “something like a semi-permanent seat on a couch in the West Wing” an idea encouraged by the president himself. Because no one was in a position to either officially approve or formally deny such access, Wolff became “more a constant interloper than an invited guest.”
“There were no ground rules placed on his access, and he was required to make no promises about how he would report on what he witnessed,” the book said.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders has however denied this after excerpts from the book were published by New York Magazine with the title “Donald Trump Did Not Want to be President.”
“There was one brief conversation that had nothing to do, originally, with the book.It was, I think, around five to seven minutes in total since the President has taken office. And that’s the only interaction that he’s had,” she said.

At least 27 people were killed and nearly two dozen wounded in a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Sunday when an unidentified gunman opened fire, the local media reported.

Local police told Channel KSAT12 that the shooter was dead but did not specify the cause of death or the exact number of victims inside the First Baptist Church, Efe news reported.

The shooter was later identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, according to two law enforcement officers briefed on the situation, CNN reported.

Sutherland Springs is located 45 km southeast of San Antonio. A heavy police presence, including Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) personnel, was reported at the crime scene after the incident.

The church was celebrating Mass at the time of the shootings.

"Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response. More details from DPS soon," Texas Governor Greg Abbott said on Twitter shortly after the incident.

United States President Donald Trump condemned the shooting as an "act of evil" and called it "horrific" in his first public remarks after the incident took place.

Donald Trump nominates Jerome Powell to lead US Federal Reserve

Powell will replace current Fed Chair Janet Yellen

donald.jpg

Markets breathed a sigh of relief after President Donald Trump named Jerome Powell his pick to be the next chair of the Federal Reserve.

If confirmed, Powell – considered a “safe” choice – would take over from current Chair Janet Yellen in February, becoming one of the world’s most powerful people.

So what’s the big deal? Economist Greg Wright explains why who leads the U.S. central bank matters to us all.

Powell, who must be confirmed by the Senate, will replace current Fed Chair Janet Yellen when her term at the helm of the central bank expires in February.

Trump said Powell is "strong, committed and smart," and has the "wisdom and leadership to guide" the US economy.

Who is Jerome Powell?

Powell is a Republican and a wealthy former investment banker who currently serves on the Fed’s Board of Governors. He was first nominated by President Barack Obama in 2012. Perhaps the most notable feature of his biography is that he lacks a background in economics, expertise that the previous three Fed chairs brought to the table.

Given that Powell has consistently expressed moderate views regarding monetary policy, the choice is seen as a cautious one, signaling that the Trump administration’s primary goal is to keep the global economy on its current path of steady growth and low unemployment. In short, Powell is expected to continue Yellen’s relatively dovish policies.

Stephen Paddock, Las Vegas suspect, was a gambler who drew little attention

Details about Mr. Paddock's career and livelihood were sparse, aside from observations by neighbors and family members

las vegas 2.jpg

He was a high-stakes gambler recognized in the casinos of Nevada. He dabbled in real estate investments in Texas. His last known full-time employment was 30 years ago. He was twice divorced. He had a pilot’s license and had owned two single-engine planes.

While his motive for the mass Las Vegas shooting outside a Las Vegas casino on Sunday night is unknown, details of Stephen Paddock’s history pointed to an unmoored and highly unconventional life.

From his neighbors in a quiet retirement community in Mesquite, Nev., he drew little attention, unless it was for his extreme propensity to keep to himself. He displayed no strong religious or political views, his relatives said, and was not known for angry outbursts.

But he was the son of a bank robber who ultimately escaped from prison and spent most of the 1970s on the F.B.I.’s most wanted list. His girlfriend, sought for questioning by law enforcement officials after the shooting, had passed through Tokyo, officials said.

Details about Mr. Stephen Paddock’s career and livelihood were sparse, aside from observations by neighbors and family members that he routinely gambled large amounts of money. “He was a gambler, that was his job,” his brother, Eric Paddock, told reporters Monday at his home in Orlando. “He was a wealthy guy, playing video poker, who went cruising all the time and lived in a hotel room.”

Mr. Paddock and his three brothers were raised by their mother, who told the children that their father had died when in fact he was in prison, Eric Paddock said. Mr. Paddock’s father was convicted in 1961 of committing a series of bank robberies, and was sentenced to 20 years, but escaped from La Tuna federal prison in Texas in 1968 and then became a used-car dealer and.... Read Full Article

Las Vegas shooting: Over 18 guns, explosives found at house of Las Vegas gunman who killed 59

The arsenal uncovered in Mesquite comes on top of at least 16 firearms discovered in the Vegas hotel room

Las Vegas 2.jpg

Authorities have said they had recovered a weapons cache including firearms, explosives, and ammunition from a house owned by Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock, as they upped the death toll from the attack to 59.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said officers searching the house in Mesquite, Nevada recovered "in excess of 18 additional firearms, some explosives and several thousand rounds of ammo, along with some electronic devices we're evaluating at this point."

Lombardo said the death toll from the Sunday night assault on an open-air concert on the Vegas Strip had risen to 59, while 527 people had been injured.

He said law enforcement were working four separate crime scenes: Paddock's room at the Mandalay Bay hotel, the concert venue, the gunman's house in Mesquite, and another house he owns in northern Nevada which a SWAT team was poised to raid.

The arsenal uncovered in Mesquite comes on top of at least 16 firearms discovered in the Vegas hotel room, from which Paddock launched the deadly assault before killing himself.

Lombardo said investigators had discovered several pounds of an explosive called tannerite in the Mesquite home, as well as... Read Full Article

Profitable companies, no taxes: Here's how they did it

Companies took advantage of array of tax loopholes and aggressive strategies

Companies took advantage of array of tax loopholes and aggressive strategies

BREAKING NEWS - Complaining that the US has one of the world’s highest corporate tax levels, President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have repeatedly vowed to shrink it. Yet if the level is so high, why have so many companies’ income tax bills added up to zero?

That’s what a new analysis of 258 profitable Fortune 500 companies that earned more than $3.8 trillion in profits showed. Tax reformers have long argued that the nominal 35 per cent federal rate on corporate profits more often than not functions like a strike-through price - an artificially inflated number that sounds high but rarely applies.

Thanks to a variety of loopholes and tax-dodging methods, those 258 corporations paid an average rate of 21.2 per cent, according to a report by Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

Here is a snapshot:

2016, the year that was: Business and Economics

Millions of leaked documents, dubbed the Panama Papers, exposed the legal but dubious tax dealings

2016, the year that was Business and Economics.jpg
Around this time last year, the Coalition government was trying to manage the nation’s Business and Economy despite political shakeups, we were all watching a country on the verge of leaving the European Union, and some businesses were in the spotlight for behaving badly. Anyone getting deja vu?
As we look back at what made news in business news  and economics news in 2016, there is certainly a little bit of history repeating, in addition to some being made.
  1. Questioning China’s influence in Australia
  2. Changing industries
  3. Global waves beyond Australia’s shores
  4. Backpackers, 457 visa and migrant workers
  5. Company results
  6. Budget, election, budget update
As in the Trump and Brexit tumult overseas, Australians are also unhappy with inequality in the property marketsuperannuation and household incomes and wealth, just to name a few.
But despite all this tension, it should be calm around the Christmas dinner table. As long as no one mentions smashed avocado…

5 ways how India stands to benefit from the US pulling out of TPP

1471515006-8336.jpg
United States President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said the US will quit the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal on his first day in the White House. The mega trade deal involves 12 Pacific rim nations including major economies like Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. With a collective population of about 800 million, almost double that of the European Union's single market, the bloc currently accounts for 40 per cent of world trade. While the free trade deal will see tariffs slashed between member nations to boost falling trade, sections within the US has argued it will further accelerate the slide in American jobs and production. Guessing that Trump does not go back on his decision, something he is known to do, India stands to benefit in a plethora of ways if TPP does not materialise.
