On current trends, it will take 170 years for women to be paid the same as men

Breaking News - Eight richest men in the world own the same wealth as the 3.6 billion people who make up the poorest half of humanity, said a study by Oxfam, an international confederation of 19 social organisations, on Monday.
"Just eight richest men own the same wealth as the 3.6 billion people. None of them has earned his fortune through talent or hard work, but by inheritance or accumulation through industries prone to corruption and cronyism," claimed the study released ahead of the World Economic Forum annual meeting at Davos in Switzerland from Tuesday.

In India, the study recalled that lawmakers passed a disclosure mandate in 2013, requiring CEO-pay ratios to be made public, which is an important step towards informing the public about the level of inequality within companies.
"It is not only in rich countries that CEOs (Chief Executive Officers) are rewarded with salaries that far outstrip average incomes. A top executive in India's largest cigarette manufacturer is being paid 439 times the median salary for employees at his company," claimed the study, citing a report by the capital markets regulator Securities Exchange Board of India (Sebi).

Latest News - The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council on Monday broke a deadlock over issues of administrative control over assessees and broadly agreed to roll out the dual control GST from July 1, instead of the earlier deadline of April 1.
Whether a state or the Centre will assess an entity would be decided by a computer programme. The Council also resolved a logjam over the right to tax economic activities within 12 nautical miles from India’s coasts.
Against the earlier proposals of reserving administration of assessees up to Rs 1.5 crore in annual turnover for states, or of allowing both the Centre and states to jointly administer these, the Council decided to blend the two suggestions.

However, if there is a dispute between states over the place of supply, the Centre will have the power to administer those assessees. In all situations, the Centre will retain the power to collect this tax.

Breaking News - After setting new records at the box office, "Dangal" swept away the night's three of four major awards — Best Actor, Film and Director while Alia Bhatt won the Filmfare Best Actor Award (Female) for her performance in "Udta Punjab".
Attended by most actors of the Bollywood film fraternity, the iconic 62nd Jio Filmfare Awards was a star-studded event hosted by actor Shah Rukh Khan.
After winning the Best Director award, Nitesh Tiwari said, "This award is the reassurance of how much people loved our film (Dangal). So I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone in India and abroad who loved and supported our film. It means everything."
Alia, who came along with her mother Soni Razdan and sister Shaheen Bhatt, received the Best Actor (Female) award from Sridevi and Boney Kapoor.
On receiving the award, she said, "It's very close to my heart (Udta Punjab). Thank you Shahid for sending the script to me. Today is very special day for me. Sridevi ji receiving it from you is an honour. Another reason is my sister is here. Got her out of home."

Time to end tax havens: Richest 1% own 58% of India's total wealth

Breaking News - In signs of rising income inequality, India's richest 1 per cent now hold a huge 58 per cent of the country's total wealth -- higher than the global figure of about 50 per cent, a new study showed today.
The study, released by rights group Oxfam ahead of the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting here attended by rich and powerful from across the world, showed that just 57 billionaires in India now have same wealth (USD 216 billion) as that of the bottom 70 per cent population of the country.

Globally, just 8 billionaires have the same amount of wealth as the poorest 50 per cent of the world population.
The study said there are 84 billionaires in India, with a collective wealth of USD 248 billion, led by Mukesh Ambani (USD 19.3 billion), Dilip Shanghvi (USD 16.7 billion) and Azim Premji (USD 15 billion). The total Indian wealth in the country stood at USD 3.1 trillion.
The total global wealth in the year was USD 255.7 trillion, of which about USD 6.5 trillion was held by billionaires, led by Bill Gates (USD 75 billion), Amancio Ortega (USD 67 billion) and Warren Buffett (USD 60.8 billion).
In the report titled 'An economy for the 99 per cent', Oxfam said it is time to build a human economy that benefits everyone, not just the privileged few.

Although generally recognised as safe, the internet is awash with articles about the dangers microwave radiation poses to your food. Some claim using microwaves can cause “cataracts and cancer”. Other posts says it “zaps the nutrients right out of your food”.

If the food is already contaminated with bugs that produce toxins, microwaving might kill the toxin-producing bug but not destroy the toxins, despite the correct temperature and time combination. This can also apply to other cooking methods. Appropriate food storage is the key to minimising such risks.

  • Avoid overcooking vegetables to minimise nutrient losses
  • Before microwaving, check the labelling on the package and follow the instructions
  • If the package is not marked as being microwave-safe, switch to a suitable microwave container
  • Rotate and stir foods during cooking to spread the temperature of heating equally and as such minimise potential for food-borne illness. Check the temperature of food before consumption
  • Remember microwaving cannot magically make contaminated food safe. So if in doubt, throw it out.

Snapchat to introduce new features in app ahead of IPO

Breaking News - As Snapchat sets for an initial public offering (IPO) that may value the messaging platform at as much as $25 billion, the photo and video-sharing app is set to roll out major changes in its app, media reports said.According to a report in Tech Crunch on Friday, Snapchat just made it easier to navigate the app with a universal search bar that is always accessible at the top of the app.
Available for some people on Android, the new changes will roll out to all iOS and Android users soon.
The search bar lets you dig out of Snapchat the best content and conversations.

"Improved search could be a huge boon to brands, businesses and influencers hoping to build their Snapchat audience," it added.

Snapchat is also introducing "Our Story" -- a new global live story that any user can contribute to at any time.
The "Quick Chat" suggestions will let you hop to a particular friend's message thread or story a lot faster, the report added.

A teary-eyed  Joe Biden accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a ceremony at the White House dedicated to honouring the outgoing vice-president.

Biden was visibly overwhelmed and said the award was more than he deserved. "Mr President, I'm indebted to you. I'm indebted to your friendship. I'm indebted to your family," he said.

Breaking News -  It hasn’t been a great time to be a man without a job. The jobs that have been disappearing, like machine operator, are predominantly those that men do. The occupations that are growing, like health aide, employ mostly women.
One solution is for the men who have lost jobs in factories to become health aides. But while more than a fifth of American men aren’t working, they aren’t running to these new service sector jobs. Why? They require different skills, and pay a lot less. They’re also seen as women’s work, which has always been devalued in the American labour market.
The two occupations predicted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to decline most quickly from 2014 to 2024 are locomotive firers, shrinking 70 per cent, and vehicle electronics installers and repairers, down 50 per cent. They are 96 per cent and 98 per cent male.
Of the fastest-growing jobs, many are various types of health aides, which are about 90 per cent female. When men take these so-called pink-collar jobs, they have more job security and wage growth than in blue-collar work, according to recent research. But they are paid less and feel stigmatised.
“The jobs being created are very different than the jobs being eliminated,” said David Autor, an economist at MIT. “I’m not worried about whether there will be jobs. I’m very worried about whether there will be jobs for low-educated adults, especially the males, who seem reluctant to take the new jobs.”
