Latest News : Aamir Khan-starrer wrestling drama Dangal has grossed around Rs 1,501 crore worldwide, collecting $12.64 million till 11 pm (China Standard Time) on Sunday in China and has become second Indian film to gross over Rs 1,500 crore Club.

Dangal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has grossed over $113 million in China, becoming highest non-Hollywood foreign grosser in the Chinese box office, posing threat to the position of S S Rajamouli's action fantasy epic Baahubali: The Conclusion as the top worldwide grosser among Indian films. Dangal grossed Rs 1,501 crore till now, among which Rs 731.36 crore is from China and Rs 25.78 crore is from Taiwan, according to movie trade analyst Ramesh Bala. In the Chinese box office charts, Dangal has dethroned Guardians of the Galaxy-2 in China in the second week and continues to be at the top since then.

However, Dangal's brilliant run can be challenged once the "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", the fifth movie from the popular franchise, releases in China next Friday (read more...)

'WannaCry' - the ransomware, asked users to pay a $300 ransom in bitcoins

'WannaCry' - the ransomware, asked users to pay a $300 ransom in bitcoins.jpg

Latest News : The recent ransomware attack has renewed a long-running debate about the dangers of digital currency. For those who are not yet aware, a malicious malware attacked almost 150 countries. The concept of the attack was simple: Your computer gets infected with a virus that encrypts your files until you pay a ransom.

"WannaCry" - the ransomware, asked users to pay a $300 ransom in bitcoins. The ransom note indicates the payment amount will be doubled after three days. If payment is not made after seven days, the encrypted files will be deleted. Security experts warn there is no guarantee that access will be granted after payment. Some ransomware that encrypts files ups the stakes after a few days, demanding more money and threatening to delete files altogether.

Why do hackers prefer Bitcoin over other modes of payments?
  • Of late, digital currency Bitcoin has emerged as a favourite tool for hackers.        Why is it a soft target? - When you pay something digitally, you use net banking, credit card or debit card. Now your information is attached to the card such as name, address, etc).
However, the case is different with bitcoin. The transactions you make using the currency are completely anonymous. According to a NDTV report, whenever customers trade in bitcoin, a private key associated with their wallet is used to generate a bit of code. That code is publicly associated with customer transaction but with no personal identifying information.
Thus, every transaction is recorded and securely signed in an open ledger that anyone can read and double-check.
Experts say that one of the probable reasons why hackers chose bitcoin as a form of payment was this - It protects identity.
Earlier, hackers used to ask for money from PayPal but due to stringent KYC (Know Your Customer) norms in PayPal, they have shifted to bitcoins.(read more...)

Breaking News :  WannaCry Attacks encrypts data files and ask users to pay a $300 ransom in bitcoins. The ransom note indicates the payment amount will be doubled after three days.

If payment is not made after seven days, the encrypted files will be deleted. A look at how best one can protect oneself from ransomware:
  • New ransomware variants appear on a regular basis. Always keep your security software up-to-date to protect yourself against them
  • Keep your OS and other software updated. Software updates will frequently include patches for newly discovered security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by ransomware attacker
  • Email is one of the main infection methods. Be wary of unexpected emails, especially if they contain links and/or attachments
  • Be extremely wary of any Microsoft Office email attachment that advises you to enable macros to view its content. Unless you are absolutely sure that this is a genuine email from a trusted source, do not enable macros; immediately delete the email instead
  • Backing up important data is the single-most effective way of combating ransomware infections. Attackers have leverage over their victims by encrypting valuable files and leaving them inaccessible.
  • Using cloud services could help mitigate ransomware infections, since many retain previous versions of files, allowing you to ‘roll back’ to the (read more...)

Wrong name in PAN, Aadhaar cards? Now, you can fix such errors online

Last week, the I-T department launched a facility to enable a taxpayer to link his Aadhaar and PAN

 PAN and Aadhar.jpg

Breaking News : Your permanent account number (PAN) or Aadhaar documents have errors in names or other details? There is no need to worry, the income tax department has launched an online facility to correct such issues.

Alongside the facility to link biometric identifier Aadhaar with PAN, the department has also put two separate hyperlinks on its e-filing website — one to update changes in existing PAN data or for application of new PAN by an Indian or a foreign citizen.

The second hyperlink is for individuals who want to update Aadhaar details by logging into 'Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal' using the unique identity number. The individual can then upload scanned documents as proof for data update request.

Over 1.22 crore assesses already have Aadhaar-linked PAN but the number is abysmally low as there are over 25 crore PAN card holders in the country, while Aadhaar has been issued to 111 crore people.

As per statistics with the tax department, only 6 crore people file income tax returns at present.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, through an amendment to the Finance Bill for 2017-18, had made Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns and provided for linking of PAN with Aadhaar to curb tax evasion through use of (read more...)

Emojis might be your next password. Here's why

People commonly use emojis to express moods, emotions and nuances in emails and text messages

EMOJIS

Current News :  Would you rather unlock your smartphone with a plain four-digit PIN or with a smiley-face emoji? Would it be easier and more pleasant to remember emojis for example, or “2476”?
Smartphone users commonly use emojis to express moods, emotions and nuances in emails and text messages – and even communicate entire messages only with emojis. In 2015, a British company tried using emoji passcodes in place of PINs at bank ATMs. But there had been no formal study of how easy they were to use, or how secure they were in comparison to other methods, like PINs.

Want To Shed Extra Kilos? Try Eating Avocados

To learn more, in the lab and in the real world, a team of researchers from the Technical University Berlin, Ulm University and University of Michigan, led by TU Berlin Ph.D. candidate Lydia Kraus, developed EmojiAuth, an emoji-based login system for Android smartphones. How well would users remember their emoji passcodes? Could they be more secure, too? And might they be more fun, adding a bit of enjoyment every time a user unlocked her phone? (read more...)

 Stephen Hawking
